The Western Balkans were hit by severe weather and flash floods in 2014 and experienced the devastating effects from climate change up close. Lives were lost and there were extensive material damages. Assessments of the damage was 3.5 billion € for Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
All the Western Balkan countries have fertile lands and a high number of agriculture exports and in many parts the people live off the land. Floods and heat waves seriously affect crop production and so livelihood of people.
Yet, there is no mention about climate change on the news and the region energy sector is heavily based on coal and lignite.
